Lands of Ruin: Lands of Ruin Post Apoc Models Available for Free and Open Source!

The talented people behind Lands of Ruin have taken the brave decision to make their excellent post apocalyptic miniatures open source for free for both commercial and private use! Check the files here and start printing!

Producing physical products is hard and time consuming especially if you’re doing it for the first time and have no contacts in the field. That was a lesson hard learned in our Lands of Ruin Kickstarter campaign. Lands of Ruin is a game we have been working on for years. When we wanted to take the game to the next level and make it “legitimate” we felt that having your own range of miniatures was a must. This is a decision I would now revert if I was to do it all over again. The fact is that we are not miniature makers. We had to hire everyone from modeller to casters outside our team. That ended up costing much more time and money than we estimated.

Despite all odds we managed to create and deliver a great and high quality line of miniatures to our Kickstarter patreons. In fact, I believe we are one of the fastest Kickstarters to deliver their miniatures (I’m still waiting to receive many rewards from campaigns I backed long time before we launched ours). The time and effort spent creating and shipping the miniatures had an impact to the rest of the project that we failed to see. Our development time of the actual game took much longer than estimated. We ended up delivering the game months late schedule.

In retrospective, I feel that embarking to the adventure of creating miniatures was a huge mistake. There are hundreds of miniature games every year on Kickstarter, Many of them with much better miniatures lineup than ours. I would also argue that 90% of the miniature games on Kickstarter have very little substance beyond the artwork and miniatures. Most rulesets are very derived and uninspired. Ours, on the other hand, had its strength in the game design. Unfortunately our Kickstarter did not reflect the fact clearly enough and the wrong focus didn’t allow us to focus to what we’re the best at: game design and development.

I think too many new gaming companies have too strong “not invented here syndrome”. While I’m aware that the miniature design is one of the strongest reflections of the game world I think there’s enough suitable miniatures for almost any new world out there already. We, as the miniatures industry, stare too much to our own feet only. I think that lack of cooperation is a huge missed opportunity. Not all of us are great artists and not all of us are great game designers. We should have courage to admit when we’re out if our depth and rely on rest of the industry to fill in.

So, here we are. We have a line of miniatures but no place to put them. The creation effort of these is too great to let them vanish into thin air. Today, we’re stopping production of any Lands of Ruin miniatures and contributing all our 3D model IP back to the gaming community and release them as free and Open Source downloadable models. Anyone can take them and print / cast them themselves and even distribute and sell them. Any company or individual is free to use them in their own game or product in anyway they wish. We do wish that anyone using them would link back to our website though. Lands of Ruin will continue as a game. But from now on we’ll be focusing on what we’re good at: creating the LoR game systems, companion app and the world and story of Lands of Ruin.

The Lands of Ruin Kickstarter has entered the final two days of their campaign to fund their post-apocalyptic hybrid wargame combing miniature tabletop wargaming with tablet driven gaming software.

6th Extinction Games: Lands of Ruin Post-Apocalyptic Balean Slaver Mulcibur and Slaves Reviewed!

Today we will be reviewing the new post-apocalyptic Lands of Ruin miniatures which are created as part of the ongoing Kickstarter to launch the Lands of Ruin hydrid wargame.

Before we continue to the actual miniatures, I would want to share some more information about the actual wargame itself as it's quite unique in my opinion. In Lands of Ruin, you don't need thick paper rulebooks, characters cards and other means of bookkeeping as this has all been replaced by smart tablet driven game software! Using this unique gaming software instead of common wargame mechanics, allows you to create a more dynamic and realistic gameplay counting in the software's artifical intelligence along with numerous statistics and conditions.

To support this wargame, the people over at 6th Extinction Games have also been busy creating some interesting  post-apocalyptic miniatures to inhabit the savage world of Lands of Ruin. These miniatures are supplied in packs and each include one hero along with three of his cohorts or lesser warriors. There are six of these miniature packs available for pledging evenly split over the Reclaimer and Balean factions.

The miniatures

The miniatures delivered were loosely packed in bubblewrap and supplied with some information leaflets about Mulcibur and the Lands of Ruin wargame for review purposes. Note that the cartonboard box was shredded (probably somewhere during the journey towards our headquarters and softened by the extremely bad weather) and due to the loose bubblewrap packaging I almost lost one of Mulcibur's arms which broke off from the sprue. Note that the packaging as descibed above is not how these will be send to customers.

The miniatures I have received for reviewing are based around the cruel Balean slaver Mulcibur and his unfortunate slaves. An exception among his tribe, Mulcibur is one of the rare tradesman amongst the Baleans when he is not raiding and locked in combat. He is a Balean slaver - the only merchant class within the tribe. His main purpose for becoming a warrior was so that he could select his stock firsthand from the battlefield, instead of relying on other warriors to bring back live spoils from raids.

All the miniatures received were casted in resin and came as mentionned above in packs of four miniatures. The Mulcibur character was supplied on a small sprue and exists out of three pieces being the body and two separate arms. The three bomb-strapped slaves are supplied as single casts. The quality of the casting is very good with excellent details and very minimal mouldlines and only two very tiny airbubbles on two of the slaves.

As these 28mm scaled miniatures are mostly intended for skirmishes, they are very detailled and packed with character. Mulcibur is detailled with tiny handcuffs hanging from his belt and the decorations on his helmet are sipmly superb. The unfortunate slaves are each strapped with deadly explosives and are also very nicely detailled as you can see in the supplied pictures. The miniatures above can be purchased as an individual miniature pack on the Kickstarter for £18.00 also including the Lands of Ruin digital pack. Higher Kickstarter pledges seem to save you some money on buying individually.

The painted miniatures

As I haven't found the time yet to paint these miniatures. I have taken some pictures from the ongoing Lands of Ruin Kickstarter showing Mulcibur and his slaves fully painted by a talented miniature painter using the non metallic painting method technique. As you can see very nice!

The conclusion

As you can see in the review above we like these new post-apocalyptic skirmish miniatures from Lands of Ruin. Each of the miniatures supplied is packed with detail and character and is also casted to perfection. So if you're looking to give Lands of Ruin a try or simply add these miniatures to your own miniature collection make sure to check out the ongoing Kickstarter here. The campaign has already been fully funded but is ending within five days so make sure to grab them while you can.

Disclaimer - We received these miniatures for free from 6th Extinction Games for reviewing purposes. Please note that this doesn't influence our review as we always strive to supply you with our own independent and honest opinion about the wargame products reviewed.

6th Extinction Games: Lands of Ruin - Post Apocalyptic Hybrid Wargaming Kickstarter

6th Extinction Games has launched their Lands of Ruin Kickstarter to fund their hybrid post-apocalyptic wargame! Combining software and tabletop gaming with excellent miniatures, they have ventured into what I think is the future of modern wargaming.

Easily track the statistics, wounds and abilities of your miniatures with tablet driven software and explore the Lands of Ruin without the need of consulting your rulebook and the hassle of manual bookkeeping. So forget battlefields filled with markers, tokens and pieces of papers and use the easy to navigate software instead. Using the specially developed software more realistic gameplay can be introduced without slowing the game down while also offering a clear overview of your faction's situation during the turmoil of chaotic combat!

6th Extinction Games: Lands of Ruin - Post Apocalyptic Hybrid Wargaming

So what have the guys behind Lands of Ruin have to say? Lands of Ruin is a post-apocalypse tabletop wargame. However, it is not just another run-of-the-mill clone of every other game on the market. This next generation tabletop game utilises the recent advances in mobile technology to bring a more realistic, faster paced, and deeper gaming experience to the already mature tabletop wargaming genre. A companion tablet app (Android and iOS), called the “Command Console,” allows for more rapid gameplay, while simultaneously introducing a level of depth and realism that cannot be achieved in other game systems.

Even before the beginning of our Kickstarter campaign, we had already established a working relationship with a European miniatures manufacturer. We have completed a test production run, and are prepared to move to the production phase very quickly after this Kickstarter campaign succeeds.

Sixth Extinction Games: Post Apocalyptic Lands of Ruin - Artificial Intelligence Explained

Sixth Extinction Games has just published an interesting article on the software driven artificial intelligence system of their upcoming post apocalyptic Lands of Ruin Kickstarter.

We mention A.I. controlled NPCs as one of our main features whenever we're asked to give a couple of bullet points about Lands of Ruin. In this article we want to dive deeper into questions like "What does Artificial Intelligence - A.I. mean?" and "What does it mean to bring A.I. to the tabletop?"
