Today we will be reviewing the new post-apocalyptic Lands of Ruin miniatures which are created as part of the ongoing Kickstarter to launch the Lands of Ruin hydrid wargame.
Before we continue to the actual miniatures, I would want to share some more information about the actual wargame itself as it's quite unique in my opinion. In Lands of Ruin, you don't need thick paper rulebooks, characters cards and other means of bookkeeping as this has all been replaced by smart tablet driven game software! Using this unique gaming software instead of common wargame mechanics, allows you to create a more dynamic and realistic gameplay counting in the software's artifical intelligence along with numerous statistics and conditions.
To support this wargame, the people over at 6th Extinction Games have also been busy creating some interesting post-apocalyptic miniatures to inhabit the savage world of Lands of Ruin. These miniatures are supplied in packs and each include one hero along with three of his cohorts or lesser warriors. There are six of these miniature packs available for pledging evenly split over the Reclaimer and Balean factions.
The miniatures
The miniatures delivered were loosely packed in bubblewrap and supplied with some information leaflets about Mulcibur and the Lands of Ruin wargame for review purposes. Note that the cartonboard box was shredded (probably somewhere during the journey towards our headquarters and softened by the extremely bad weather) and due to the loose bubblewrap packaging I almost lost one of Mulcibur's arms which broke off from the sprue. Note that the packaging as descibed above is not how these will be send to customers.
The miniatures I have received for reviewing are based around the cruel Balean slaver Mulcibur and his unfortunate slaves. An exception among his tribe, Mulcibur is one of the rare tradesman amongst the Baleans when he is not raiding and locked in combat. He is a Balean slaver - the only merchant class within the tribe. His main purpose for becoming a warrior was so that he could select his stock firsthand from the battlefield, instead of relying on other warriors to bring back live spoils from raids.
All the miniatures received were casted in resin and came as mentionned above in packs of four miniatures. The Mulcibur character was supplied on a small sprue and exists out of three pieces being the body and two separate arms. The three bomb-strapped slaves are supplied as single casts. The quality of the casting is very good with excellent details and very minimal mouldlines and only two very tiny airbubbles on two of the slaves.
As these 28mm scaled miniatures are mostly intended for skirmishes, they are very detailled and packed with character. Mulcibur is detailled with tiny handcuffs hanging from his belt and the decorations on his helmet are sipmly superb. The unfortunate slaves are each strapped with deadly explosives and are also very nicely detailled as you can see in the supplied pictures. The miniatures above can be purchased as an individual miniature pack on the Kickstarter for £18.00 also including the Lands of Ruin digital pack. Higher Kickstarter pledges seem to save you some money on buying individually.
The painted miniatures
As I haven't found the time yet to paint these miniatures. I have taken some pictures from the ongoing Lands of Ruin Kickstarter showing Mulcibur and his slaves fully painted by a talented miniature painter using the non metallic painting method technique. As you can see very nice!
The conclusion
As you can see in the review above we like these new post-apocalyptic skirmish miniatures from Lands of Ruin. Each of the miniatures supplied is packed with detail and character and is also casted to perfection. So if you're looking to give Lands of Ruin a try or simply add these miniatures to your own miniature collection make sure to check out the ongoing Kickstarter here. The campaign has already been fully funded but is ending within five days so make sure to grab them while you can.
Disclaimer - We received these miniatures for free from 6th Extinction Games for reviewing purposes. Please note that this doesn't influence our review as we always strive to supply you with our own independent and honest opinion about the wargame products reviewed.
