Today we will take a closer look at the Snap Ships Tactics strategic miniatures battle game from Snap Ships LLC designed by Lynnvander Studios featuring some excellent pre-painted plastic modular spaceships! Assemble your own spaceships from 100+ individual pre-painted plastic components and engage your enemies in deadly tactical combat using your own unique ship actions and more!

Snap Ships Tactics Starter Box

During this review we will take a look at the Snap Ships Tactics Starter Box which forms the core of the extensive Snap Ships Tactics gaming range next to their ship expansions and more gaming components. This starter box contains everything you need to play the game including rules, miniatures, tokens, dice and more. The full list is as following 100+ Plastic Ship Parts, 8 Chassis Cards and 24 AI Cards, 28 Part Cards, 10 Custom Dice, 2 Heavy Duty Flight Stands (2 heights), 2 Hull and Evasion Trackers, 2 Plastic Move tools, Terrain, ID, and Missile Tokens, 50 Energy and Heat Cubes and 3 Range Rulers. 

The quality, design and artwork of the plastic and cardboard components is really top-notch! The only remark regarding the content, is that there's no space gaming mat included in the starter box although this is a minor point as those can easily be sourced from plenty of wargaming mat manufacturers. Good examples can be found here and here

Snap Ships Tactics Sabre and Scarab Spaceships

The starter box contains 2 highly modular spaceships, the Sabre and Scarab along with their plastic flying stands. These models are supplied in 100+ individual building blocks shared between the two models and can each be assembled in three different configurations offering plenty of possibilities and unique actions to add to the ship's control panel. 

These models are the real selling point of this battle game, really fun and easy to assemble and loads of cool options to choose from. Did I mention that these awesome spaceships are simply huge! I love them but the large scale might be an issue when playing larger battles or when you're gaming space restricted. They could probably been made smaller but then you would certainly loose the cool modular approach and all the lovely options.

Each ship can be assembled from the many individual plastic building blocks of which the cubes supplied in both Forge Grey (Sabre) and Komplex Black (Scarab) form the base of each ship's construction. Next to these basic parts are many more detailled pre-painted pieces such as missiles, engines, wings, thrusters, exhausts, weapons and more. Each of these unique ship parts have their own Chassis and AI Cards and Part cards showing the unique actions they add to the ship's control panel.

Snap Ships Tactics Gameplay

The gameplay revolves around maneuvering ships on a free-form battlefield. Players allocate energy to their ship's systems to move, dodge, and fire various weapons. The goal is to destroy the opposing squadron's ships while taking advantage of the battlefield terrain. Snap Ships Tactics supports various game modes, including 1v1, solo play against an AI ship, and cooperative play. 

Snap Ships Tactics has been compared to games like X-Wing Miniatures Game and Wings of Glory. However, it offers a distinct experience with less emphasis on movement templates and more focus on strategic maneuvering and energy allocation. The game is designed to be immersive and enjoyable, with a focus on creating a fun and engaging experience for players. The Snap Ships toy line, which the game is based on, has been praised for its wide appeal and the joy it brings to both kids and adults.

Games of War: Steel City Wargames Terrain - Portable Laser Cut Steel Scenery Reviewed!

Today we will take a closer look at the brand new Steel City Wargames Terrain currently being funded on Kickstarter by Henry from Games of War based in Oxford in The United Kingdom. This new science fiction wargaming scenery made out of laser cut steel is actually more or less a full battlefield in a bag. Being made from indestructible steel, the scenery is very robust and durable while also being portable and storable due to the very compact size and custom storage bag. The scenery is produced in the Midlands, UK out of cold rolled steel which naturally patinates and is 100% recyclable. Steel City Wargames Terrain

So today we take a look at the Steel City 'Full Block' in Air Drop Bag which includes no less than 2x Big 'L' buildings with 4 Floors (including 8 Magnets), 4x Medium 'L' buildings, 4x Small 'L'  buildings and 6x Czech Hedgehogz anti-tank obstacles neatly stored in a portable 'Air Drop' Bag. This terrain has been designed to be useful for casual or competitive gaming supplying a nice amount of scenery and line of sight blocking features for tournament gaming.

Although more inclined to use more custom-build and detailled scenery (and therefore more fragile scenery) myself I can certainly see this type of scenery being attractive for wargamers often playing in different locations and tournaments. The scenery is near indestructible so will last a lifetime and is easily portable due to the compact size and useful storage bag. The detail of the buildings is rather simplistic due to the chosen material and design but gives a very nice impression of the structures with vents, windows and doors all very suitable for wargaming.

So let's start with the cool and useful Czech Hedgehogz anti-tank obstacles of which 6 are included in the package. These are each supplied in two pieces which easily fit into each other, pretty useful to keep out those deadly tanks and armoured vehicles while holding the city ruins.

Next are the 2 Big 'L' ruined buildings with 4 Floors (including 8 Magnets), these are pretty impressive and offer some very good cover for your miniatures. These pieces are supplemented with steel floors and magnets allowing you to add some levels for your defending units. As you can see the two buildings can easily be placed to construct one building with four defendable sides instead of the normal two.

Then we have the 4 Medium 'L' ruined buildings which can also be used with the modular floors as mentionned above. The scenery pieces are smaller but can also be used in pairs to construct larger buildings offering some very useful line of sight blocking obstacles for your wargames.

The last of the buildings included are the 4 Small 'L'  buildings which are some kind of industrial buildings with exhaust vents and large ventilation systems. These are pretty cool and can fit together to form a full industrial unit, great as an objective or camouflaged stronghold position.

Last but not least the useful storage bag made to carry all of the above mentionned scenery and plenty of more. Allowing you to take your scenery with great ease to different locations and tournaments or a good way to safely store your scenery when not in use. The bag doubles as a cooler bag too!

The Conclusion

This Steel City terrain isn't like your more usual scenery made out of plastic, resin, wood or other more fragile materials but build to last out of quality steel. The detail of the buildings are rather simplistic by design and due to the chosen purpose of being durable and easy to transport. Supplied with a custom bag for transportation and storage you can easily take this scenery to different venues, clubs and tournaments without to worrying about their fragility. Although I'm more into detailled scenery, I can certainly see the appeal of this terrain being used by frequent travellers, tournament players and club organisers.

Wargames Terrain Workshop: 28mm African Themed Village Scenery Reviewed!

Today we take a closer look at the Wargames Terrain Workshop 28mm African Themed Village Scenery. Wargames Terrain Workshop is a UK based wargame company offering resin scenery, miniatures among their own Death Match tabletop game while also offering painting and sculpting services. The resin scenery range is quite large with more than 504 references so certainly worth checking out. 

For today's review we will check out their African Themed Village Scenery including the Clay Hut, Food Store, Hollowed Out Canoe, Palisade Wall, Ruined Hut and Animal Enclosure. While sold as African scenery these can easily be used for other historical, fantasy and science fiction settings. 

African Themed Village Scenery

The scenery as shown in this review is only a part of the African Themed Village Scenery so if you're looking for more scenery make sure to check the Wargames Terrain Workshop website. As mentionned before all scenery shown below is hand cast in resin and scaled 28mm. The master models were hand created from a variety of materials such as plastics, wood, clays etc Disclaimer all the models featured in this review were created and master modelled by yours truly so I won't comment much on the actually design of these models but think they are characterful and quite useful. That said let's continue.

So first we have two types of round huts, one with a clay exterior while the other has a wooden exterior. Both round huts are thatched and have a single entrance being either a wooden door or an entrance covered with a curtain. Then we have two ruined huts representing the previously mentionned round huts in their burned down or destroyed state. Both sets allow you to create in game scenery changes when buildings are destroyed which might be useful depending on scenarios and missions. Both round huts retail for £6.00 while their ruined versions are available for only £4.00.

Next we have the palisade wall and animal enclosure offering some interesting pieces to fortify your village against marauding warbands and savage wildlife. The animal enclosure could als be used as a primitive arena or as a strongpoint in the village defence. Both constructions are build out of sharpened tree trunks offering some much needed protection for your villagers or livestock. Last but not least we have the very useful hollowed out canoes. The animal enclosure retails for an affordable £6.00, the palisade wall for £4.00 and the canoes for only £2.00 a piece. Pretty fair prices considering the size and amount of resin used in these scenery pieces.

Conclusion

To conclude this review of the Wargames Terrain Workshop scenery, pretty useful and generic terrain for either historical, fantasy or even science fiction settings. With these intersting scenery pieces you can easily and affordably build a tabletop village featuring much of the needed buildings and constructions. The quality of the casting is good although some work will be needed such as sanding off excess resin to level some of the buildings. As mentionned before I made the master models of these scenery pieces years ago and I'm still happy with the achieved results. Wargames Atlantic: Plastic SciFi Death Fields Male & Female Cannon Fodder Reviewed!

Today we will take a closer look at the Wargames Atlantic Death Fields Male and Female Cannon Fodder kits! These 28mm hard-plastic multi-part science fiction miniatures are part of the extensive and still expanding Death Fields miniature range. These cool miniatures are pretty generic and therefor extremely useful for all sorts of purposes, these can be assemble as soldiers, civilians, scientists, prisoners, explorers, settlers, starship crewmembers and much more. To be honest the possibilities are as endless as your own imagination especially when combined with the digital set but later more on that. So let's take a closer look at these new figures.

About the Death Fields universe: Death Fields: The Greatest Sport is War. For thousands of years, advanced alien civilizations have visited the Earth for one purpose: to steal their bravest warriors. For centuries, the cream of Earth's soldiers have been taken against their will to fight, die, and be reborn in arenas throughout the galaxy.

The Game Guilds provide some of the most watched sport in the known universe with matches broadcast in thousands of systems. A perennial favorite of sports fans everywhere are the humans - a primitive race from the far edge of the galaxy. Over the millennia, the finest warriors of that backwater planet have been brought to the arenas to fight each other and a host of other sentient species and deadly creatures. 

Even now, thousands of years since abductions began, Recruiters still acquire the best of Human space's warriors for the games. The humans go on in their tiny light-years bubble of space attacking each others colony worlds, believing themselves the most advanced race in the universe while the rest of the galaxy watches their immortal ancestors fight and die in the Death Fields... The Death Fields will be a constantly expanding range building toward a future game release once we have enough plastic sets and factions.

The Cannon Fodder (Male & Female)

"These are the dregs of the Death Fields sport: the washouts, the mental cases, the warriors who just can't cut it or the teams whose strategy, training, or cunning have fallen behind new, younger franchises... These are also the one final chance for an owner to profit. Cobbled together into a horde and given basic weaponry, the typical Cannon Fodder bout is an ugly display of sheer numbers thrown at a standard roster team. Defeat is an almost foregone conclusion, but not always, and audiences often root for these men, women, and beings sent to fight to a final, Real Death."

These science fiction Death Fields model kits contain enough hard-plastic components to create 30 male cannon fodder figures while the female cannon fodder model kit contains enough parts to create 24 miniatures. As with all science fiction miniatures by Wargames Atlantic these are scaled heroic 28mm. Note that the initial male cannon fodder kit was already released somewhere in August 2021 while the much more recently female cannon fodder kit was released in July 2022, looks like time really flies! As both sets have different sprues and overall content, this review will be further divided in two to show the similarities and differences between both model kits.

The miniatures are supplied in a nicely illustrated box with artwork by Mark Stacey and pictures of the painted miniatures by Matthew Leahy which are a great painting reference. The miniatures were digitally sculpted by Thieu Duong and are tooled and manufactured in United States of America.

The Male Cannon Fodder

So let's start with the first released set containing the male cannon fodder, as mentionned before this model kit contains enough parts to assemble 30 multi-part plastic miniatures representing poorly equipped or low-tech soldiers, convicts, colonists or other roles. This boxed set contains 6 body sprues and 5 weapon sprues giving you plenty of equipment and weapon options for your miniatures.

As you can see the body sprue contains five male bodies in numerous dynamic poses all dressed in loose-fitting coveralls or jumpsuits. These comfortable one-piece garments are a great option as they are quite generic and can cover both military and civilian clothing. Next to this the body sprue also contains most of the heads including heads with helmets, kepis or caps and bald heads with explosive or tracking collars more suited for convicts. Each of these body sprues contains five of the above mentionned heads so plenty of spare heads too for other projects.

The second type of sprues included are the weapon sprues of which five are included. As you can probably guess from the name these sprues contain all the cool weapons and equipment for your miniatures. As you can see in the picture, these contain six standard rifles equipped with bayonets, one heavy plasma weapon and one pistol or flare gun. Next to this the sprue also contains ammo magazines, pouches, bag packs, scopes, chains and loose rifles. As you can see these are mostly low-tech items with the exception of the plasma weapon so very suitable for both poorly equipped or low-tech military or civilians. The sprue also contains five cool heads with breathing helmets suitable for all sorts of purposes such as for space, bio hazard environments or deep sea exploration.

The Female Cannon Fodder

The newer female cannon fodder model kits contains enough parts to assemble 24 multi-part plastic miniatures representing poorly equipped or low-tech soldiers, convicts, colonists or other roles. This boxed set contains only 4 identical sprues but these are significantly larger than the male sprues. These larger sprues combine both the bodies and weapons on one larger sprue as you will see in the pictures.

These larger sprues contain 6 female bodies in different poses including a rather odd kneeling pose. The weapons included are mostly the same as on the male sprues but in different quanities, the standard rifle with bayonet is included 8 times while the sprue also includes a heavy weapon. Note that this heavy weapons seems to be of another type than the one included on the male sprues. The number of heads included is huge with all similar types of the male sprue included but in larger quanitities. Next to this the sprues also include lots of interesting bits and pieces such as ropes, bagpacks, pistols, bionic arms, knives, pouches, scopes, etc. Pretty decent amount of kit and very usable for all sorts of settings.

Assembling your Male and Female Cannon Fodder

The miniature assembly is quite straight-forward first of all I clipped and cleaned all the parts from the sprue and kept them in small part piles sorted by weapons, heads, bodies etc. Then I took the bodies and worked my way through the other parts by first testing different combinations before finally glueing (revell plastic glue) them into place. The parts between the male and female sets look mostly interchangeable which is great to add more different poses and combinations. As you can see plenty of cool types can be created and if you need even more different tools you can also 3D print your own extra tools, heads and bodies by buying the very useful Cannon Fodder Civilian Conversions Kit at Wargames Atlantic Digital.

The Scale Comparison

Below you can find some pictures of the Cannon Fodder miniatures alongside miniatures of other companies to give you an idea of the size of these new plastic science fiction Wargames Atlantic models. As you can see these Wargames Atlantic miniatures are scaled heroic 28mm.

The Conclusion

These two Death Fields Cannon Fodder sets are great for numerous settings, ideas and because they are so generic they can easily be used for both military and civilian purposes. So if you're looking to field some low -tech colonial militia, a civilian exploration team, a deep sea exploration team, a starship crew or just some planetary colonists these are the sets for you. Really like both these kits, they are very useful and a nice addition to the science fiction miniature market. 

The quality and price of these miniatures is excellent, with a boxed set containing either 24 or 30 multi-part cannon fodder miniatures. These boxed sets are retailing for €32.69 or equivalent in other currencies at the time of publication with further discounts for larger amounts of boxed sets.
