New goodies!

Hi, here are the pictures of my holiday purchases made in Germany/ Luxemburg! I wasn't able to resist the urge to expand my 20mm plastic collection so here's the result.

First of all I bought the newest box of Armourfast, some Germans Hanomags, this box suffered from enormous manufacture delays and was most wanted by 20mm wargamers and collectors! But finally I managed to get hold of one, the box contains 2 Hanomags at an affordable price. Such as all the armourfast kits these vehicles can be assembled in matters of minutes however I still haven't found the time to assemble them.

The Hanomag box, the Hanomag vehicle was commonly used by the famous panzergrenadiers and existed in different versions such ones equipped with Pak 37 or rockets!

The second purchase was a box of HAT Pak 37's, the box contains four cannons and 16 crewmembers at a more than reasonbly price! However they are made of soft plastic they take glue very well and are easy to assemble. I already assembled 3 of these cannons and I'm planning to convert the last one to a nebelwerfer (because the old Esci/Revell is OOP and too pricey).

Last of all I purchased 2 boxes of Soviet Cossack cavalry, that's a total of 34 cavalrymen! Or 2 battalions however the box is called Soviet cavalry they could easily be used as Cossacks enlisted in the German Army.

So stay tuned for more miniatures and hopefully more assembled battalions ready to refight the Second World war on the tabletop!

Shanty town (15-20mm)

Hi, here's a new post about one of my ongoing projects! Finally I have based and textured all the pieces in one go so they are ready to be painted. The shanty town will probably be used in a African setting with different generic factions such as rebels, NATO, UN and mercenary forces. I can't wait to paint up some technicals, white UN jeeps and trucks (does somebody knows where you can get UN decals?). As said the shanty town is made to represent an African township such as Soweto, the one pictured. For those who never heard of shanty towns: shanty towns are settlements of impoverished people who live in improvised dwellings made from scrap plywood, corrugated metal and sheets of plastic. These shanty towns are often built on the periphery of cities and are lacking basic necessities such as electricity and water.

First of all a storage tank which can hold water, fuel or grain and can be used as an important objective in a rebel brawl or a UN defense mission.

One of the bases which contains 2 huts and a walled courtyard.

Another base which contains 4 dwellings and a storage tank/ living area.

The largest base which contains 4 dwellings and a walled courtyard.

A base which houses a storage tank, dwelling and a small shed.

And the last base which contains 4 dwellings.

I hope you enjoyed the new pictures!

Artizan and Wargames Factory on the paintingdesk!

Hi, finally I've stopped with building terrain and started to paint some miniatures again. I suddenly felt the urge to paint because I want to play some Africa/VSF/monster games and I don't have any figures which I can use! Well, it isn't much but finally I can show you at least one finished figure (except the base) it's an explorer for my Africa/VSF adventures. The explorer is made of various plastic bits from Wargames Factory and is painted with GW paints. Next are my generic natives this time I managed to paint the spears, shields and part of their tunic. I also textured the bases with filler so they are ready to be textured with PVA and fine sand. I really love these figures because of their dynamic poses! (WIP)

As part of my smallest project: civil wars I managed to basecoat and texture the figures. (WIP)

I've also been painting my native gladiator converted with Warlord Games roman sprue and a metal Uruk-Hai head. (WIP)

Here you can see my naval contigent for my Africa adventures. The sailors are made by Wargames Factory just like the officer. However the officers right arms is from the Perry Miniatures plastic ACW cavalry. The officer is the best conversion I did, he really adds some personality to the group he commands.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures!

American naval and airforce personnel

Hi, here's a new post about my steadily growing plastic 20mm collection. This time the post is based around an undersized naval or airforce battalion. This battalion is build up with aircraftcarrier crew, pilots and other needed staff. The miniatures are mostly Atlantic seamen and some cheap copies of micro machines miniatures such as the pilot and advancing soldier. The battalion will be probably used in a Pacific setting as part of an airfield defense force or just unarmed personnel you need to protect during a fierce Japanese banzai! However they could also be used as naval personnel on ships, I will not use them for that purpose because of the flocked bases (well, maybe sometimes).

The battalion exist:

- 1 commander (1 figure)
- 2 squads of 3 bases (12 figures)
- (additional base per platoon in progress)

The officer (all Atlantic miniatures are actually designed to represent 1960-80 naval personnel but I prefer to use them in a World War 2 setting)

The entire battalion with the exception of the 2 bases which are still under construction.

Project management

Hi, today I'm posting all my progresses I've made on my different projects. Mostly to keep me focussed to actually finish enought miniatures for several games. My main focus currently lays with 20mm but I'm also slowly completing some 28mm natives, explorers, etc But first of all I want to play some Pacific wargames such as invasions, counteroffensives and off course village clearing and jungle warfare.

"Island invasion" 60% ready

- Terrain OK
- Marine battalions OK
- 2 Shermans (basing and painting needed)
- Japanese battalions (painting needed)
- Scratchbuild landing ship (construction needed)
- Scratchbuild escort ship (construction needed)

"Banzai" 90% ready

- Terrain OK
- Marine battalions OK
- Engineer battalion OK
- Japanese battalions (painting needed)

"Jungle warfare" 70% ready

- Terrain OK
- Marine battalions OK
- Japanese battalions (painting needed)
- 2 Shermans (basing and painting needed)

As you can see most of the projects are almost completed except for some transport, Japanese and American tanks. So my priorites for the coming weeks are

1) 2 Japanese battalions (1 fullsized, 1 undersized all esci miniatures).
2) 2 Sherman tanks.
3) 4 landingships and 1 escort ship.

So keep watching this blog for more progress and eventually some battlereports!

How to: Generic Field Fortifications

Today I'm presenting a short tutorial on the creation of field fortifications to be used in your World war Two wargames as for example Bolt Action. The goals of the construction was to create a series of fortifications such a single man firing holes, trenches and I have also added some naval artillery defenses. These were orginally created for 20mm miniatures but when I finished them they were large enough to hold 28mm miniatures with exception of the height but that can easily be added by adding some sandbags and logs.

The first step is to cut the hardboard bases with either a handsaw, electric saw or metal plier. The size depends on the chosen scale of miniatures but I cut out four circle bases for the single man firing holes. The two elips shaped bases are intended for the trenches while the two tear shaped bases will become the naval gun emplacements. After you have cut out the bases you sand the rough edges with fine sandingpaper so they are ready for the further steps.

Now you cut out the polystrene dike which will surround your fortification and add the necessary height. To cut out the correct shape you use your hardboard base as a template when cutting out the polystrene with either a hot wire tool or stanley knife. Another step is cutting out the space inside the polystrene shape with the same tools to create the space where you will place the miniatures. Then you also add some corrugated cartonboard and some matchsticks to create the supports of the shelter.

One of the more important steps is to add plaster and fill up the earthen embankement. The plaster used is mixed so it's still liquid and easy to spread and move around the polystrene. Be carefully and don't spill to much wet plaster on the the corrugated carto, board or it may warp. When the plaster is almost dry you can add some texture by poking in the plaster and create the look of freshly dug up earth.

Here's some information about the creation of the improvised naval gun for the smaller scale miniatures such as 20 and 15mm. I have constructed the piece out of a cartonboard base covered with thin cartonboard. For the barrel I used a plastic balloon stick. This way you can create artillery for almost no cost and add some firepower to the defenders.

When the plaster is dry you give the bottom of the pit and the plaster a coat of diluted PVA and fine sand to create some texture. You can see that the textured plaster adds some detail to the layer of sand and creates the look of freshly dug out earth.

The next step is to basecoat the entire piece with a light brown color, make sure to cover up the pieces well as this really determines the finish of your piece. Also remember some craft paints have low pigment values so make sure to paint several thin layers instead of one thick layer that covers the detail. In the picture you can still see some white so I have added another layer after taking the picture.

One of the last steps is to paint the corrugated steel and drybrush the entire piece with a cream color. The last step is too add some static grass and clump foliage (which you can make yourself but more on that in a later tutorial) Now you have the finished pieces ready to be used for your historical, fantasy or science fiction setting.

I have also added some pictures of the other pieces finished in a similar way as described above. As you can see you can create a nice defense line existing out of firing holes and trenches.

Wargames Factory: Zulu warriors

Today, I'm presenting to you the earlier this year released plastic Zulu warriors made by the Wargames Factory.

General information

As mentionned earlier the miniatures inside are made of hard plastic and are scaled 1/56 which is approximately 28mm. The miniatures inside are the fierce Zulu warriors, these warriors fought against the British rule in South Africa. However they lacked modern weapons they fought fiercely and were able to inflict the British Empire some severe blows such as the battle of Isandlwana and earlier border skirmishes. But even with these victories, the British eventually scattered the zulu army near Ulundi. However the miniatures are ment to represent the Zulu warriors from the Anglo-Zulu war they could easily pass for generic natives or islanders!

The Box

As previously mentionned the box contains 30 plastic Zulu warriors. These warriors come with a variety of unique bodies, heads and arms. Because of this approach you are able to assemble your miniatures in several poses such as fighting, defending, standing, charging or shooting. The variety of heads is due to the hierachical nature of the Zulu nation with heads avaible for married, unmarried and Iduna warriors. Here you can see the body sprue packed with everything you need to build your Zulu warrior. One box contains 6 of these sprues and enables you to build 30 warriors!

But what's a warrior without weapons? That brings us to the next sprue of the box. The weapon sprue contains all sorts of native weaponry such as shields, spears, assegais and knobkerries. The assegais are short stabbing spears used for close combats as the longer spears were used as throwing weapons. But my most favorite weapon must be the knobkerrie a multipurpose native weapon which can be used as throwing weapon or to club your enemy's head!

But these weapons are only half of the weaponry! Also included are some modern fire arms such as Henry Martin rifles and muskets which were extensively used by the Zulu's after the british defeat at Isandlwana and Shaka's reign.

Opinion

My opinion about this generic kit is very positive due to the details and the conversion possibilities! This kit is really useful for who wants to assemble a affordable native force for as well historical as pulp settings. Which takes us to the acceptable retailprice of $19.95, €20 or £15!

A new concept!

Hi, some may noticed the change in lay out and logo of the blog! This change has made because I want to change the focus of this blog. In the past I've been mostly posting lots of my terrain and miniatures but now I want to produce more reviews of wargame articles and miniatures. This to inform you about the quality, price, content, ... of certain articles before you actually buy them!

For this reviewing I'm currently looking for new products in the market and manufacturers who want to help me with this new initiative.

So are you a giant or rather homebased manufacturer of wargame materials and miniatures? And you want to get your merchandise reviewed on this blog to make the audience aware of your new business, range or miniatures? Send my up some samples of your merchandise and a link to your website. As soon as the articles arrive at my lair, I will make a free fullsized blog review within 1-3 days! For examples of reviews go to the "reviews" label.

Revell and Hät for the Second Worldwar

Hi, after a holiday in Germany I've been painting again. Currently I'm focussing on my 1/72 collection because when I was staying in Germany I visited a modelshop. The large shop and miniature train museum was situated on the border of Luxembourg and Germany. Rumbling throught the densly crowded cabinets, I came across too much nice stuff ...

Result:

- 2 boxes of Revell WW2 Cossacks
- 1 box of HAT 36mm Paks
- 1 box of HAT hanomags (2 vehicles)
- 12 bags of all sorts of flock

I always wanted to build a Russian cavalry force, now I have found some cheap boxes of cossacks and off we go! The 2 boxes combined had the same price as a common box of infantry! The 2 boxes combined contain 30 horsemen, enough for 2 battalions, now I'm still looking for something to convert to a "tchanka" for some heavy cavalry support.

I also started to paint again:

- 1 28mm explorer
- 4 28mm african porters (partially repainted)
- 12 28mm natives (WIP)
- 1 15mm airborne battalion (WIP)
- 2 15mm US marine battalions (needs basing)

So that's all stay tuned for photo's in the upcoming days/weeks!

Greets,
