Revisiting a project!

Hi, here's another post about my ongoing French Napoleonic Army! During the last weeks I steadily painted some other French soldiers in an attempt to finish battalion number two by the end of august. It's likely I will reach the deadline as I only need to paint up an additional 3 grenadiers, 3 voltiguers and the commanding officer/flag bearer and drummer. I've also managed to attach a French Flag to the "finished" battalion but there were lots of problems.

First of all, the Victrix flag was too large for the Perry Miniatures flag bearer! I've finally solved the problem by chopping the flag pole in two. After that I glued the flag in place reinforced by a piece of tin foil and just put the smallest piece of the pole in the hole on the top of the flag. After the PVA was dried it was surprisingly strong! (next time I will take pictures of the progress much easier!)

The two battalions, all the battalions will be based upon wooden bases of warbases.uk.

A close up of the second battalion in progress. Each finished battalion will exist out of 24 soldiers in marching pose and 4 voltiguers.

Another shot of the second battalion.

Operation Sea Lion, background

Hi, as part of my small ongoing Operation Sealion project I've searched some information about both factions involved in the operation. First of all I searched on the internet some information about the navy of both factions which could be used during operation Sealion in the Channel. I quickly came to the conclusion that the Germany lacked an adequate surface fleet which was heavily outnumbered by the superior British home fleet.

French war fleet at Mers-el-Kebir

So I searched more information about the French warfleet which was quite modern. This fleet together with the Kriegsmarine would pose a serieus threat to the Royal Navy. This of course is "what if", would the German Army be able to capture the French war fleets at Dakar, Toulon and Mers-el-Kebir or would be able to convince the Vichy French to join the operation. The French navy mentionned in the table below is made up by the sum of the war fleets of Dakar, Mers-el-Kebir and Toulon.

Together with the mass assembled heavy artillery on the French coast and the Luftwaffe's superiority above the channel, the Germans would probably be able to land sufficient troops and supplies for a campaign. Another thing I've recently saw in a book and on the internet are the following numbers about the British Army in 1940. These numbers were the averages of several sources and do not contain other vehicles than Light and Medium tanks.

As seen I've also added the Home Guard an important part of the British defense system however poorly equiped they were numerious and were experts in ambush as they only fought in the areas near their town and villages. An interesting fact of the Home Guard was they weren't allowed to attack airborne units of less than 6 men as all British airplanes had a crew of 6 or less! And you don't want to shoot your own pilots which were highly appreciated.

I hope you enjoyed this small update, if you have more information or comments please shoot!

Ps, this "research" is purely "what if" and isn't intended to be fully historical correct.

Bargain time!

Hi, I wanted to show you some of my latest bargains!

Luck or fate?

First of all some background, I've been visiting a hobby shop for a while now which is located in Oudenaarde nothing special as the shop only sells all sorts of hobby materials for scrapbooks, sewing and painting but noting wargame related. But somehow I always manage to buy some materials from brushes to moss! I heard that the shop was moving towards another location and all the products in the shop were selling at 50%!

I immediatly visited the shop (well, after a week or so) and was rather disappointed as the shop was almost empty, just some shelves with all sorts of stuff to make flower decorations and some baskets with rubbish. But when I looked at the baskets I saw a tip of an warhammer box under some bags of pins and buttons! I immediatly searched the baskets and found the following boxes.
  • Lord of the rings Balrog retailprice €50
  • Space marine tactical squad retailprice €30
  • Battle of skull pass painting set retailprice €22,50
I knew the real prices but none were shown on the boxes, so I asked the shop owner the price. he said €2 a box! Now that's a discount, I always wanted a Balrog but wasn't willing to pay €50!

Happy like a child I left the shop

Secondhand stores they rock!

Another bargain was when I visited a secondhand store! Searching through the endless mountains of kitch and rubbish, I found a bag with in each 10 tins of humbrol paints! The price €1 for 10 tins! Yes, another bargain. Will check that store more often!

Another story which happened a year ago, visting a secondhand store with my brother we stumbled upon a Lord of The Rings mumakill! Well my little brother did and he bought the beast which was a bit damaged and was missing parts of his howdah for only €1,5! Retailprice €65!

Tips for cheap wargaming!

1) Hobby stores!
2) Secondhand stores!
3) Flea markets!
4) The internet, pity of the high postage costs!

Do you have stumbled upon cheap wargame stuff? Tell us about your bargains!

Thanks to Santyago, Remco de Groot from http://sjemco.blogspot.com/ and Wardy-la from http://bytheordersofthegreatwhitequeen.blogspot.com/ and another dozen of blogs!

Victoriana, 1891

Hi, here's a set-up I've made to see if I have enough terrain to fill up my table for a big game! The town I've created in the pictures is Victoriana, the main British colony in Mbuij Mayi located at the Lake of Mburi. In an attempt to fill up the table I've used all sorts of buidings and even started some more! In the future I hope to use the table to recreate the large game "Revenge of the Idol" in which the Mbuij Mayians try to regain their idols which were stolen by the British Colonial Army. The game would involve some hundred(s) natives and about 70 British and civilians. But it's another project which will take forever ...

In the first picture you can see the port of the colony which is overlooked by Fort Edward. The docks and warehouses are still under construction but you can see the intention.

In this picture you can see the corner of the table which is situated right of the harbor. This place will be probably used as an objective in which the natives must free some tribal leaders from the redoubt/ prison. The redoubt is made by stacking crates which are homemade. In this picture you can also see one of the larger square huts of which 4 were made and one smaller circular hut.

Another view of the harbor, with in the left corner a small beach with a smugglers/merchant hut. You can also see one of the idols which must be retrieved by the native rebel army. the pontoons on the photo were actually built for my Sealion Invasion force in 20mm and still need some finishing touches.

In the following picture you see the upper left corner of the table which houses the governors house which is partially walled.

In the last picture another overview of the colonial under construction, maybe I will set a bigger table in my wargame room of 2,5m x 1,5m! So I will probably need more buildings and other small bits!

Perry Miniatures French infantry waiting for some paint!

Hi, here are some pictures of what's currently on my paintingdesk! First of all an overview of the temporary paintingtable in my wargame room. Now which unfinished miniatures can be found on the table?
  • 4 voltiguers
  • 2 casualties
  • 8 flank company
  • 6 centre company
  • 3 orc archers
  • 3 orcs with spear
  • 4 orcs with sword and shield
  • 2 orcs with double handed weapons
  • 4 horses

The orcs are the next miniatures in the painting line! Really need these as my army is quit small!

The four painted 25mm horses, these miniatures will be used in my "Invasion of England" game in which they will tow some sort of gun or armored coaches. These were painted up in less than half an hour!
Some voltiguers in different stages of completion.

The rest of the French napoleonic miniatures, basecoated and ready to be painted!

Small dark age farm

Hi, here's a recently finished terrainpiece that I've made to test some new materials and techniques I've found! The house was made by making a basic shape out of thick cartonboard, this shape was covered with wooden "placematts" ideal to fast construct wooden houses. The removable roof was also made out of cartonboard and was covered with dried banana leaves. The fencing was made by drilling holes in the base which I used to base the poles which support the twig fence.

Here's a close up of the fencing, which was first covered with two layers of diluted PVA, afterwards basecoated with three coats of scorched earth and drybrushed with a lighter tone.

The first new material I tested were dried banana leaves! This material is ideal as rooftiles for primitive housing as it looks really old and is very easy to cut.

The second interesting new material I used was some sort of garden fencing made of small branches and twigs. This material is ideal for woven fences which were mostly seen in the Dark ages but can serve through the ages in all kind of different settings.

I hope you enjoyed this small post about new materials!

Hidden Gems: Primeval Abyssian

Hi, the start of a new month means a new featured company on the blog! This time I'm featuring Primeval Abyssian currently a one-man project but in the end made to buy widely distributed! Primeval Abyssian will be game which involves a huge number of non humanoid alien factions which will fight each other across space! The game will also be accompagnied by its own rule book!

The basic concept of the rules
  • The rules for this game are aimed to be as simplistic as possible - while still giving players a lot of choice and allowing for a diversity of tactics and strategies.
  • Commanders play a prominent role in the games - and your Commander becomes the "core" of your force. Commanders have a variety of specialised rules, including once-per-game special-moves, powerful special weapons and the ability to build barricades.
  • There are a selection of "optional rules", and these are related to the different types of planets you may want to play on - and include a variety of extra-dimensional weather and planetary effects which add elements of danger to games. Terrain is VERY important in the game. You will not want to be too close to the enemy if you are in the open, and the game encourages you to use cover.
  • This will not be a game for everyone - of course when it comes to writing rules the only thing you can really do is write the kind of game-system you want yourself and hope others will appreciate it too.
Factions

Hi, here are some of the factions of the game more of these short background stories can be found on the Primeval Abyssian blog!
  • Tolathians; Wise, old, elemental race. Weapons based on lightning, long-range communication based on controlled cloud patterns. Cold, clinical and tough. Their biggest weakness is heat, they feed from the cold-electricity on their planets storms. Their cities resemble giant stone pillars. The inside of their cities is full of clouds, electrical energy - hostile environment to outsiders. They are the primary protagonists of the game.
  • Luuran; Highly religious, believe in an all seeing-eye, seek to master telepathic abilities so as to obtain ultimate enlightenment and eventually a group consciousness. Offending their religious disbeliefs is bad, really bad. They have temples and churches all over the dimension. Play on the false-gods/prophet themes alot. They are heavily inspired by Illuminanti imagery and views.
  • Jequerita; The unending swarm type army. Sentient killer-plants that seek to aggressively refoliate everything in their image. They have a variety of sub-species that include mountain sized plants which spit seeds into space, the equivilent of killer tumbleweeds for a "fast attack" style choice and the ability to "grow" new units in war. Visually they have have a primary stalk with large sharp thick vines covered in spikes sprouting out from the sides and a venus-fly-trap type mouth on the top of their bodies.
  • Masters of Unlife; Alien lords from a universe of "undeath", the universes real name is the Necroverse. A kind of anti-life faction. Huge hulking biomechanical drones reach out into dimensions with "life", lead by their ancient masters for ultimate "cleansing". Their weapons are based on Anti-matter. "Sight" is gifted to only the masters themselves.

The actual miniatures!

When I first heard of this game, the miniatures were still in sculpting stage and were actually going to be made in resin. Now, I've heard the news that the miniatures will be made in hard plastic! Such as the Mantic Games Miniatures as Troll Forged Miniatures has actually bought a plastic spin casting machine! I can't say much about the quality of the casting as I haven't seen these miniatures in the flesh, so it would be great if the creators of this game could send me one miniature to judge the quality!

The only factions that's already been made are the Tolathians! They look very good especially the Enhanced ones! But I actually also love the Wisps!

When enemies need to be cleared in mass numbers, The Veteran Wisps otherwise known as Enhanced ones are used. Like Wisps, they can shoot lightning except that the lightning they shoot can bounce off enemies destroying whole squads at a time. Enhanced Ones are equipped with Quake Rifles and Fiberoptic Talons.

Wisps make up the bulk of Tolathian armies. They are tough as nails and can shoot bolts of lightning from their Electron-Talons. They are reliable, heavy-hitting yet slow moving.

There's also another Tolathian creature called the Mammatus, so if your interested visit the following website!
