Karwansaray Publishing: Home of Four Popular Historic and Wargame Magazines

Karwansaray Publishing: Karawansary is an independent publishing company located in The Netherlands. We are specialized in the production of non-fiction books and magazines with a historical focus.

History isn’t black and white and we believe it shouldn’t be presented as such. That’s why we make a special effort to bring together many voices and opinions in our publications. We have a passion for finding new perspectives on the past. We publish four different magazines.

Ancient History Magazine aims at bringing together what, at least in our view, belongs together: the Graeco-Roman classics and the Near East; archaeology and philology; scholarship and readers. The whole ancient world - politics, society, literature, religion, economics, and art - in one single magazine!

Like her big brother, Ancient Warfare, Ancient History Magazine is a bi-monthly magazine that relies on a thematic approach: each issue is centered around one specific subject, such as exploration, death and burial, or political propaganda.

Ancient Warfare is the only English-language magazine focused entirely on the military history of ancient Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Beginning with armed conflict between the earliest civilizations, Ancient Warfare provides coverage and insight up to and including the fall of the Roman Empire in the west.

Given the available sources, most articles are focused on topics relating to the Greek or Roman world. However, other groups, such as Babylonians, Assyrians, Celts and Egyptians also receive regular coverage.

Medieval Warfare picks up where it’s sister magazine, Ancient Warfare, leaves off. Starting around 500 AD, Medieval Warfare examines European history during the Dark Ages, Middle Ages, and the beginning of the Renaissance. With a host of different nations and cultures competing for dominance during this period, topics in the magazine are extremely varied and diverse. While popular topics such as the Crusades and Anglo-French wars are given regular coverage, Medieval Warfare also tackles more complex and obscure topics, such as the myriad wars between the Italian city-states and the frequent conflicts between Eastern Europe and the Ottoman Empire.

Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy - Wargaming is a big hobby with many diverse factions and perspectives: striking a balance that pleases everyone can be truly challenging! We like to think what sets Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy apart from other historical wargaming magazines is its focus on having fun, no matter what kind of wargamer you are or what your background is. WS&S is a light-hearted publication, that pays particular attention to games themselves and how to play them: it doesn’t get bogged down in lengthy historical expositions or recycle content you can read yourself in any history book. We also try and keep our topics interesting and diverse. While popular periods like WWII, the Napoleonic era, and the ancient world get frequent coverage, we also try to feature the unexpected, with articles on spies, monsters and gangsters to name but a few.
