Fireforge Games: Sergeants-At-Arms Released

Fireforge Games: This plastic set is more a "new version" of our set Mounted Sergeants than a totally different new release. What we have done is replace the weapon section of the Mounted Sergeants set with the one you find in the infantry set Foot Sergeants, as well as putting a mixture of barded and unbarded horses into the box. In this way, you can assemble Mounted Sergeants with different weapon options, but above all, you can build mounted crossbowmen. It is more a "service pack" we have done for all our customers who are now not obliged to buy two different boxes (Mounted Sergeants and Foot Sergeants) to build mounted crossbowmen or to make conversions.

Sergeants-at-Arms were first raised by Philippe II Augustus of France in 1191, during the Third Crusade, as a bodyguard against the Assassins. There were never many of them, and they fought alongside the rest of the army as a part of the royal family. Richard I of England had 24 with him on the Crusades. They were formed into a 20-strong Corps of Sergeants-at-Arms by King Edward I in 1278, as a mounted close escort. In 1399, King Richard II limited the corps to 30 Sergeants, and King Charles II had 16. During the 13th Century, most European kings likewise established bodies of Sergeant-at-Arms. They carried a mace bearing the royal arms as a symbol of office, but their armament included a crossbow as well as a short lance and a shield.

This box enables you to build up to twelve mounted Sergeants-at-Arms of the 12th/13th Century. Several weapon options such as spears, swords, axes, maces and crossbows are included.
