Indonesia under President Sukharno was rife with factions. The Army was least enthusiastic about the Confrontation with Malaysia and Sukharno's plans for a South East Asian super-state which he dubbed "Maphilindo". Although the army was involved in a number of incursions into Malaysian territory, most fighting was done by ground troops belonging to the Navy and Airforce, which for convenience were known as "Para-Commandos". These troops were mainly armed with ex-US World War Two equipment. In fact, it has been pointed out that there are no significant differences in terms of weapons and equipment between the land forces of Indonesia and that of South Vietnam in the period up to 1968 when the latter began to be re-issued with more modern gear.
