I remember the time wargames rules covered a decent amount of timelines. Ancients was 500BC to 1485AD. Renaissance ran from then until around 1685. Then came the black powder era until the late 19th century and were followed by rules covering colonial, WW1 and interwar. The last two were WW2 upto the late '50s. The Cold war era became the modern.
Now, if you have a set of rules you release several sets to cover each of those and then some! Ancients pre 500bc. post 500 bc to 500ad, then dark ages, medieval then late medieval! And so on and so on.
