Industry Insight: Renedra Showing Convential Mouldmaking using 3:1 Master Models Part Three

Renedra and Perry Miniatures: .... and now stage 4! Renedra's latest update below. Step 4 – Developing the split line with masters in the lay down board – ‘live’ on the new Perry Miniatures Light Cavalry project.

Using hard clay which is softened under heat we now start to ‘build’ the 3 dimensional shuts outs around each of the masters, this is harder than it looks as it has to be built exactly to the previously drawn red split line. We have to take into account that we leave no near vertical faces and no knife edge conditions once it is cast. We also have to envisage this in ‘mirror image’. We have to take into account where the ‘gates’ are going to be (gates – these are where the plastic comes from the frame into the individual parts – this we will explain in more detail later in the process).

Once all the shut outs are built up they are smoothed to a fine finish. Everything is going smoothly on this project so far and that is because of the quality of the masters they are absolutely lovely to work with, sometimes there is a lot more ‘fixing’ on projects. This is just one lay down board of three that we have to do for this three quarter frame, this one board will take our guy approximately 3 days to do to get it ready for the next stage which is the resin copying aid casting. Check the pictures and other steps here on Facebook.
