Industry Insight: Renedra Showing Convential Mouldmaking using 3:1 Master Models Part Two

Renedra and Perry Miniatures: Manufacturing process – step 3 – Preparing the lay down board for the mastersNow that the 3:1 figure masters have all been split lined, we move onto the next stage, this is preparing the lay down modelling board to set the masters in. We mark out the lay down board with the correct position of the ‘runners’ (runners are the outside and inside framework of the sprue, how the plastic comes into the mould and gets to the parts).

We position the masters on the lay down board and mark an outline around each figure/part of where we will be cutting, we now set the modelling board on a milling machine and machine out the board, this is to set the masters to the correct height (this is roughly half way – sometimes exactly half way – for example spears and figures with bases attached). Later this afternoon we will be starting to develop the 3 dimensional shut outs around each master and we will be taking some pictures of this development and posting them. You can find all the pictures here.
