Welcome to our first Sunday Special in which we will take a closer look at some nice plastic boxed sets which are released or scheduled to be kickstarted or released in 2014. I have been posting about these new releases in short daily newsflashes but I thought they deserved a bit more attention as they offer cheap armies for beginning and veteran wargamers but also create a lot of conversion material. I have tried to gather all the upcoming historical plastic releases but surely I may have missed some but I hope I brought you some nice news!
First of all we have the recently released Perry Miniatures American Civil War Artillery boxed set containing three high quality hard plastic guns, three limbers and 18 crewmembers for only £20.00! The release of this long-awaited boxed set has made it possible to build up a cheap Confederate or Union army for the American Civil War period. As they also have their older generic cavalry boxed set, the generic infantry boxed set and the newer Confederate infantry boxed set. Wargaming the large battles as Gettysburg in 28mm is finally possible without breaking the bank!
Then we have the long announced plastic boxed sets from Victrix Miniatures. The first ones are their 28mm Ancient Greek peltasts and slingers and their Ancient Greek unarmoured hoplites and archers boxed sets. These sets are a great addition to their existing Ancient Greek line which already features plastic Spartans, Athenians and Thebans plastic boxed sets. The actual release date of these miniatures isn't mentionned but the miniatures are being tooled at the moment so they will probably be released later this year.
Another nice boxed set that was announced in 2013 were the hard-plastic Republican Romans for the Punic Wars of which I added some soldier renders made by the digital sculptor Emel. As with the other boxed sets by Victrix there's no release date mentionned but we can only hope they will be released in 2014 as they could complement the Romans due to be released by Agema Miniatures.
Then we have the last upcoming boxed sets from Victrix which are some rather nice World War One miniatures! Here's the blurb from their website: Next we have a bit of a 28mm WW1 surprise for you! WW1 British and Germans are being worked on at present for a dual release followed by heavy weapons and characters and then followed by French. Julian has been pushing for this period for a long time (since we began 6 years ago I think!) Bob is doing a lovely job on these. This is just a teaser to wet the appetite so a few more images next week. Keep watching for updates of this exciting new period for us.
Fireforge Games has also announced their upcoming Light Mongol Cavalry which they have recently previewed on Facebook and is due to be released on the 12th of April during the salute convention in the UK. I have added some pictures of the test sprues along with a painted example. More pictures on their Facebook page.
We also have the Pro Gloria Miniatures plastic Landsknecht boxed set which was announced in 2013 and will be sculpted by Paul Hicks! The boxed set will contain enough parts to make 24 landsknecht usable as Swiss, Germans, Italians or French. They were scheduled to be released during Christmas 2013 but it seems that the deadline was missed so they will probably be kickstarted in early 2014. I have managed to find the following pictures of the promising artwork and greens online.
Last but not least we the Republican Roman Legionnaires by Agema Miniatures which were also previewed in 2013. I have found this recent news on their Facebook page: We'll also shortly start taking pre-orders for our new Legionary box set. The box will comprise 40 figures, with the ability to build 16 Hastati, 16 Principes and 8 Triarii. Keep a look out on our website for pre-orders to open, and we'll also be offering some bundle deals with our Velites to help you built those legions quickly!
